Top Tips
- Don’t trap yourself in anything longer than a 12 month contract. We have included longer contracts at the bottom in case you want to check them out, but we generally advise against getting one as a student.
- Order in advance. Let’s face it, students leave everything to the last minute. That means every August/September more than a million students are ordering their broadband. Installation dates often get pushed back by weeks, and in some cases, months. If you know when you’re moving in, you can book now and choose a start date in the future. You’ll only start paying from the date you choose, and you can make sure it will actually be ready for you when you move in!

NowTV have very competitive fibre optic broadband offers, with 12 month contracts as standard. This makes them a great alternative if Virgin isn’t available in your area. Their fastest ‘Super Fibre’ has an average speed of 63Mbps. They also have non-fibre offerings for those of you that need it.
Plusnet
Plusnet are another great alternative if Virgin aren’t available in your area. Their speeds and prices are very similar to Now, and they boast UK call centres if you have any issues!
BT
BT’s 12 month contracts are live! Get yourself BT Fibre on a student friendly 12 month contract. Their 9 month offers aren’t available yet, Want us to let you know if they go live? Sign up here.
Three
Three offer 12 month contracts on their 4G & 5G home broadband. Just plug it in – no phoneline or engineer required. In our opinion, it’s probably not worth risking the 4G. The 5G, on the other hand, is a great option if Superfast 100Mbps+ fibre isn’t available in your city.
John Lewis
Your nan’s favourite department store also does broadband. They offer 12 month contracts and are pretty reasonably priced. We find there are better options out there… such as all the ones listed above. You can’t buy a pair of socks from Virgin though, can you? Checkmate.
All Broadband Providers below this line ONLY offer 18 or 24 month contracts.
Vodafone
Vodafone has widely available superfast fibre broadband, which is great! What’s not so great is that they only offer 24 month contracts. Boooo! On the plus side they do have some great mobile contracts. You can find their mobile offers on our main Vodafone page.
EE
EE only offer 24 month broadband contracts at the moment. They do also have 1 month rolling contracts on their mobile broadband. We’re not really counting this, as it costs £75 a month for 100mbps 5G broadband; with an up front fee of £275. If you hate money you can grab that offer below. That said, their mobile network is the fastest in the UK. Check out their mobile offers on our main EE page.
Sky
Sky, believe in better only 18 month contracts.
TalkTalk

What Download Speed Do I Need?
These days Fibre is pretty much a necessity. The general rule is – faster the better. That said, if you live in a house of 3 people and only use broadband to surf social media, there’s no point wasting money on 500Mbps fibre. You also don’t want your Netflix to freeze every 5 minutes, so it is a balancing act between cost and speed. In an average student house you can get by on 60+Mbps, with 100Mbps+ being optimal. If you stream a lot of TV, play a lot of computer games, or have 5+ people in your house you may want to consider a faster speed.
Important: The download speeds that broadband providers advertise are the average speed, and at peak times they can halve. With this in mind, if the price difference is a few quid a month, it’s probably worth boosting your speed.
